2016 Subaru BRZ Turbo Review And Specs

First hybrid sports car started rolling, then Mustang got its first 4-cylinder engine, and now it seems that Subaru’s sports car BRZ will finally get turbocharger in order to pony up its performance. The 2016 Subaru BRZ Turbo was already unveiled in some way since STI Performance Concept revealed in New York is pretty much what we should expect from future, production-ready model.

Unlike the concept which uses 2.0L turbocharged flat-4 boxer engine from Super GT race car, 2016 Subaru BRZ Turbo is supposed to get FA-20 engine which will also be used in Subaru Legacy. This 2.0L turbo flat-4 version develops 296 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque in Legacy which is more than plenty. However, BRZ Turbo might get a few additional ponies which could set the output to around 325 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. Of course, Legacy’s CVT gearbox is out of place in a sports car like BRZ which means that most of them will get 6-speed manual and/or optional 6-speed automatic transmission.

Specs Of 2016 Subaru BRZ Turbo

STI is truly a screamer thanks to regular model’s petite, sleek design and concept’s attention to detail. Furthermore, concept features bring few details that no BRZ offers currently, like large wing spoiler around the back and special wheels. The 2016 Subaru BRZ Turbo might not look exactly like the concept, but it should offer a few distinctive details in order to separate itself from conventional lineup. We can still expect low nose and sleek front fascia, together with arching roofline and flared fenders from all sides. Rear end should be similar as well, but expect different exhaust system for turbo engine.

We can also expect slightly remodeled interior. It is still unclear whether Japanese automaker plans to offer 2016 Subaru BRZ Turbo as a single model which should sit near the top of the lineup, or as number of models with turbocharged engine. If former happens to be true, expect premium fabric with some Alcantra or suede inserts and contrasting stitching across the whole cabin. If latter is on cards, we’ll get plenty of options to choose from. Sporty, curved dash with circular air vents and compact instrument panel with small display in the middle of it are also to be expected, and rest of the features list will likely remain unchanged compared to current models.

As far as fuel economy goes, the 2016 Subaru BRZ Turbo will certainly use more fuel than models with naturally aspirated engines, but differences shouldn’t be that big. Gap actually depends both on transmission option and on number of horses that new Turbo model will have in the end. Turbocharged engine will surely be more expensive, and don’t expect the car to be available for less than $30,000 or even $35,000. This is significant increase when compared to base price of a regular model that comes to the market at base price of $20,000.

It is not that easy to offer turbocharged version of this vehicle. It is not enough just to add turbo to the base engine, it is not even enough just to swap the engine. Subaru added many changes and now we are getting upgraded suspension and what is even more important larger brakes. This is needed so you could always keep everything under control, even if you decide to push it little bit harder on track. With larger and wider tires you will get more grip so that power of the engine could be transferred in better way.

2016 Subaru BRZ Turbo Review

When original BRZ was officially introduced we really liked the looks of it and the fact it comes with rear-wheel drive setup. When we say that it offers engine that is capable of delivering 200 hp it certainly sounds nice since it is packed in small and not so heavy body but it did not manage to go with our expectations. Many drivers simply wanted more and the right answer is the 2016 Subaru BRZ Turbo with recognizable design and a lot more power. The 2016 Subaru BRZ Turbo is still taking its time, but at least we finally have the rough date in mind, it should come to the market during the fall of this year. This 2+2 coupe will now be more aggressive and, hopefully more desirable thanks to additional horsepower from the turbocharged engine. In any case, this sports car deserves better sales figures and hopefully, Turbo model will be the one to procure them.
