Third generation of Nissan Frontier badged as D23 is available since last year in many overseas markets, but in North America, decade-old D40 models are still pretty much the only choice. We know that D23 won’t be offered in the states, but lack of news at this point worries us, latest reports suggest that the 2016 Nissan Frontier will be offered as a new version for U.S. market. In fact, this should worry the Japanese auto maker as they can’t possibly hope to compete with new batch of fresh compact pickups from GM with a 10-year old design vehicle.
Overseas markets feature a number of petrol and diesel 4-cylinder engines, but American version still clings to the old 2.5L 4-cylinder unit with 152 hp and 171 lb-ft of torque or 4.0L V-6 unit making 261 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque. Both rear and all-wheel drive configurations are offered across the board, and so is optional 5-speed automatic transmission. However, standard gearboxes vary between engines. While 4-cylinders get standard 5-speed manual gearbox, V-6 versions are tied to 6-speed manual option.

Now, thing is that Nissan works with one of the best diesel engine makers, Cummins on the new lineup addition. 2.8L 4-cylinder unit reportedly makes around 200 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque, but it is still unclear whether 2016 Nissan Frontier will have the honor to be the first model with it under the hood. With introduction of this Cummins unit we are sure that Frontier would be much more interesting to larger number of buyers.
Specs Of 2016 Nissan Frontier
U.S. market Frontier is still a boxy pickup with ageing body and 2016 Nissan Frontier will most likely be the same with few nice upgrades. Small grille with angular headlamps and slightly pronounced fenders will, thus, be carried over. Furthermore, midsection and bed design will also remain almost identical. Basic King cab remains a 2-door experiment, while Crew cab adds another duo of doors and more room at the back. Thing is that in order to get a larger cabin, you still have to order V-6 engine to go with it.
2016 Nissan Frontier Interior
As above, so below – or for this article’s purpose; as outside so is on the inside. No major changes inside 2016 Nissan Frontier cabin as well. Plastic dashboard with combination of modern and outdated curves will remain as it is. Instrument panel is quite protruded, just like it is the case with full-size pickup trucks, and features 5-inch color display in its mid-point. It is standard in most, but not all models. Same goes for rest of connectivity options like USB port, Bluetooth and three 12-volt DC power outlets. Safety features are pretty standard and include mostly mandatory systems with the addition of optional rearview monitor and parking sensors.

Smaller 4-cylinder units are rated at 21 mpg combined with manual and 19 mpg combined with automatic transmission. V-6 option range from 17 to 19 mpg combined but the figures depend both on transmission and drivetrain. Mentioned Cummins diesel option would fix these numbers considerably and jump to high twenties in combined mpg. Prices start from $18,000 for entry-level models and go to $31,500 for top range models.
2016 Nissan Frontier Release Date
Currently available Frontier had started to show its age some time ago, and things have now come to the boiling point. However, Japanese still don’t intend to change a thing even though competition had finally awakened from its slumber. Only thing that can make a difference now is a next-gen model, but at least diesel engine would be appreciated. At this point it is a good question if the 2016 Nissan Frontier will come as a new version or we will be again getting carryover what we do know is that this model will be available in the next few months.
