2016 Mazda CX-5 Redesign And Release Date

The CX-5 replaced bigger CX-7 model at the end of 2012 as a 2013th model and remains unchanged since. This compact crossover is built upon Mazda’s SKYACTIV platform and 2016 Mazda CX-5 model will most likely be face lifted as fourth year in the generation.

Sport, Touring and Grand Touring are Mazda’s trademark trim levels you’ll find in previous models in this lineup and the new CX-5 is no different. Base powertrain is 2.0L 4-cylinder which gives 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque and comes exclusively with Sport model in FWD layout. The 2.5L 4-cylinder engine puts out up to 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque in available Sport 4WD, Touring and Grand Touring models. The 6-speed manual transmission can be ordered only with FWD model which means that it’s tied to 2.0L engine, while 6-speed automatic transmission comes with the rest of the lineup.

There are also reports about the 2.2 liter inline four cylinder turbocharged diesel unit but we do not expect to see this unit on the U.S. market and that is a real shame. We do not have details about power it will offer but it will be 150 hp and probably even more, depending on the state of the tune in which it is offered. If it comes to the U.S. it would mean that Mazda has another unit that can significantly lower the fuel consumption but still the one that could offer decent amount of power.

Exterior design won’t be changed much. Sporty compact SUV will keep the trapezoid grille, but might get new lower air intake and headlights. Out back, trapezoid tail-lights might also be changed, and so could bumper, but these also won’t be radical, as only mild facelift is necessary. On spy photos that we have we can notice that many segments of the car are masked which means that there will be a decent number of changes to it.

Refresh

The 2016 Mazda CX-5 might be a compact, but it easily fits five people and their cargo. Cloth and leather seats will again find their way into CX-5’s trim levels and soft-touch cloth cabin trim will remain as the only option as well. However, Grand Touring will come with synthetic leather surfaces and plenty of features other models don’t offer like heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control with pollen filter and Bose surround sound audio system with 9 speakers. Instrument panel holds 5.8-inch touch screen display at the top of it (optional on entry model). This enables the use of a rearview camera which is unavailable with Sport models, and navigation which comes as optional choice in all models. Safety features are standard for a compact, and beside airbags, stability and traction controls and anti-lock brakes, CX-5 comes with blind spot monitors in higher couple of tiers and smart city brake support which is part of the tech package.

Base engine returns 26/35 mpg with FWD and 26/32 mpg with 4WD, while bigger 2.5L four has the fuel economy ratings of 25/32 mpg and 24/30 mpg with FWD and 4WD drivetrains respectively. Price is another thing that won’t change, at least not significantly and 2016 Mazda CX-5 will cost at least $21,500. Touring model will go for $25,000 and top tier Grand Touring should keep a price tag of $28,000. Additional features and more options will further increase the price.

2016 Mazda CX-5 Release Date

The 2016 Mazda CX-5 will be slightly refreshed for its fourth year in the markets. However, changes will be mostly cosmetic and all of its abilities will be carried over. That said, it will keep the good handling and steering, solid fuel efficiency and plenty of space for a compact vehicle. More details about changes will be available after this car comes to the market which is expected to happen during summer of the next year.
